CT Solar Incentive Program

In March 2012, the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CEFIA) unveiled its new solar photovoltaics residential investment program. The ultimate goal of the program is to support 30 megawatts of residential solar photovoltaics (PV).  The first round of funding is $7.5 million, although long-term there is $40 million allocated to the program.  Only customers of Connecticut Light & Power and United Illuminating are eligible.

Who is eligible?

  • If your home is in the Connecticut Light & Power Company or the United Illuminating Company service territories and offers a good location for a solar system, you can qualify to receive CEFIA’s residential solar incentives.

Cooper Industries LED lighting

Recently completed training for Cooper industries and there latest lines of LED and high efficiency lighting systems. LED lighting is a fairly new concept in relation to lighting fixtures and Cooper has brought many innovative designs and solutions to the market.

A standard LED fixture has an expected life cyle of 50,000 hours or 15 years. The upfront cost is a little more but you may never have to change the bulb and cost of electricity is going to increase over time so the payback is huge.  An Led retrofit lighting system is expected to have a payback period of 3 years and a return of 30%.

Newer technology and materials have created LED’s that can match the color and light output of a standard incandescent bulb.

CFL 9-11W = 40W Incandescent

CFL 13-15W = 60W Incandescent

CFL 18-20W = 75W Incandescent

Color Temperature and Kelvins.

Soft White – 2,700 Kelvins

Cool White – 4,100 Kelvins

Day Light – 6,500 Kelvins

Soft White (sometimes referred to as warm white) (2700K) is a more traditional soft light. It most closely reproduces the Kelvins (color) of an incandescent light bulb. As you go higher in color temperature (higher Kelvins, 6,500K) the color is a bright bluish light.

Finding the correct color temperature for lighting different rooms in your house will depend on each room and your needs. For example in the living room where you may not need bright lighting you may choose a softer more traditional soft white light (2,700K). In your kitchen or office you may want to choose a cool white color temperature (4,100K) for bright lighting. In the bathroom you may want the lighting to be as day light, you would then choose a higher color temperature (6,500K).

When lighting your home, it is a good practice and a great way to cut your energy cost by finding the correct color temperature you need, and then choosing a bulb with a lower wattage.

The rated life of a CFL bulb:

The rated life is based on continuous use for 3 hours a day every day, in a recommended setting.

Mercury in CFL bulbs:

There is a small amount of Mercury in all CFL bulbs so that they can operate. If the CFL is not broken there is no exposure to Mercury and are safe to use as a incandescent bulb. What does LED stand for?

LED is short for Light-Emitting Diode.

What is the rated life of an LED bulb?

LEDs are known for being very long-lasting and many LED bulbs have a rated life of up to 50,000 hours. They last about 50 times longer than a typical incandescent bulbs.

Where can LED bulbs be used?

Most LED bulbs are a direct screw in replacement for standard household light sockets.

Are LED bulbs green?

Yes, LED bulbs are very green. Since LED bulbs use less electricity to produce light they help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and this helps lower electric bills.

Do LED bulbs generate a lot of heat?

No, LED bulbs generate very little heat which is why LED bulbs are very energy efficient. Even though LED bulbs give off very little heat they should not be placed in a completely enclosed fixture. They still need to allow the heat they do produce to dissipate for the heat sink.

The Advantages of LED bulbs:

(1) Extremely long rated life. (2) Use much less electricity. (3) Do not contain any mercury. (4) Do not emit UV or infrared radiation. (5) Extremely environmentally friendly. (6) Can be mounted at any angle. (7) Give off very little heat.
